KUMAI is Sophia's small East London studio making colourful, featherlight crochet earrings from perle cotton - each pair worked by hand, in small batches, with natural variation in every stitch.
Who makes KUMAI
KUMAI is made by Sophia, working from a small East London studio. Every pair is crocheted individually: each motif is worked from the first foundation chain to the final edging, then the ear wires and silicone backs are attached by hand. Nothing is outsourced and nothing comes off a production line - the pair you buy is the pair that was made for you, stitch by stitch.
Why crochet?
Every KUMAI earring is crocheted in perle cotton, a tightly twisted mercerised thread with a smooth, rounded structure that holds crisp stitch definition and keeps its shape in wear.
Crochet gives the motifs their open, airy texture, so even the biggest statement designs stay soft and light - most weigh between one and three grams per earring. It also puts colour within reach of every stitch: threads can be changed row by row or petal by petal, which is how KUMAI builds colourways with contrasts and blends that other techniques can't match.
Small batches, natural variation
Each pair is made to order or in very small batches, so nothing waits on a shelf and colourways stay fresh. Slight differences between pairs are part of the design: tension, colour placement and edging shape vary a little from one pair to the next because each is made by hand, not by machine. No two pairs of KUMAI earrings are identical - yours will be the only one quite like it.
